Mosaics 1E-Glass-on-Glass Mosaics (MAY 10 and 17, 2024, mornings)
Friday mornings, MAY 10 and 17 (9am-noon)
NOTE: This class is for intermediate or advanced mosaic artists.
Creating a glass-on-glass mosaic (that resembles stained glass) is a technical challenge. It requires more planning, meticulousness (calling all OCD people!), and the correct application of adhesives (avoiding grout bleed). Each type of tesserae could require a different technique as well as a different adhesive, all within the same mosaic.
In this session, you will learn to:
- Plan your display method in advance.
- Prepare a glass-on-glass mosaic substrate.
- Select the appropriate tesserae.
- Apply the appropriate adhesive to various tesserae.
- Modify your design as needed.
- Grout with either traditional or clear/sparkly “grouts” (resins).
For this class, you will need to bring your own substrate (preferably flat, but it can be a vase, etc.) and your selection of FLAT, clear/translucent tesserae. I will provide several adhesives for you to try; however, you will likely need to buy some of your own so you can work on your project at home.
Instructor provides:
Instruction, handouts, adhesives, and glass shaping tools.
Students bring:
Your personal mosaic tools (that are not provided by the instructor), your glass substrate, and your tesserae (clear or translucent glass). You should come to class with an idea, but as we discuss the techniques in class, you may change your overall plan – part of the collaborative learning process! If you decide to use a resin-based grout, you’ll purchase that on your own.
