Mosaics 1D-Mixed Media Mosaics (SEPT 2023, mornings)
Friday mornings, SEP 8, 15 and 29 (9am-noon)
NOTE: This class is for intermediate or advanced mosaic artists only. If you are a beginner, take the October class, “Mosaics Using Found and Personal Items.”
Creating a mixed media mosaic is an opportunity to use a conglomeration of the ‘cool’ tesserae you have been collecting - You know who you are! However, it’s not easy and requires planning – and constant modification. Each type of tesserae requires a different technique as well as a different adhesive, all within the same mosaic.
In this session, you will learn to:
- Design a multi-media mosaic.
- Plan the technical approach.
- Apply the appropriate adhesives to various tesserae.
- Modify your plan and design as needed.
INSTRUCTOR PROVIDES:
Instruction, handouts, adhesives (Weldbond, regular and pre-mixed thin set, silicone glue, Apoxie Sculpt, and more), pliers and wire cutters, and glass shaping tools. NOTE: I do not have tools for shaping tile or ceramics.
STUDENTS BRING:
Your personal mosaic tools (any not provided by the instructor), your primed substrate (anything but plastic), and your tesserae (beads, jewelry, metal items, stones, gems, shells, pre-cut glass or small tiles, stones, smalti scraps, etc.). You should come to class with an idea, but as we discuss the techniques in class, you can develop your overall approach to the project – part of the collaborative learning process! Class and workshop registration fees are non-refundable. If you miss a class, you can take another of the same value within 3 months of the original one or give it to someone else. However, you need to send me an email to make these changes.
