Intermediate Mosaic Paintings (Starts APR 3, 2024)
This class is offered by The Art Institute, Arizona Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM)
For details and to REGISTER, visit: ASDM Art Institute
Apr 3, 10, 17, 24 and May 1 (2024)
Wednesday 9:00 am - noon
$160 museum members/$210 nonmembers
Do you feel ready to create a mosaic from one of your own nature photos? In this intermediate to advanced class, you create an 8x10" mosaic with your own photo, using the double-direct method and specialized glass cutting techniques. Before the first session, the instructor will send guidance on selecting and preparing your photo. Then, in the first session, you will calculate how much of each color of glass you need to purchase for your project.
Because each photo is unique, STUDENTS PURCHASE THEIR OWN ART GLASS. All other materials, tools, and safety equipment are provided. No open-toed shoes or open beverage containers.
Note, too, that glass cutting and nipping requires considerable hand strength. Aprons are recommended. Students must use their own photos, copyright-free ones, or have written permission to use someone else's.
This class consists of five 3-hour sessions. Masks are optional.

Workshop-Advanced Mosaic Flowers
This class is offered by The Art Institute, Arizona Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM)
For details and to REGISTER, visit: ASDM Art Institute
In this ADVANCED workshop, you create a dramatic mosaic of flowers. You will learn to use the color values of your art glass to create realistic shadows and highlights. You will learn more sophisticated shape-cutting techniques and use multiple colors of grout to accentuate your mosaic. Before the first session, the instructor will send guidance on 1.) selecting and preparing your flower photo on a computer, 2.) calculating how much glass you need to bring to the first session, and 3.) what tools of your own that you’ll need when working on the mosaic at home.
Because each flower is unique, STUDENTS MUST PURCHASE and BRING THEIR OWN ART GLASS to the first session. All other materials, tools, and safety equipment are provided; however, when students work on their mosaics at home, they’ll need their own tools (glass cutter, running pliers, and wheeled nippers). No open-toed shoes or open beverage containers allowed in the classroom but bring lunch or snack to eat al fresco. Note, too, that glass cutting and nipping requires considerable hand strength. Aprons are recommended. COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED (yours or someone else’s) TO PREPARE THE FLOWER IMAGE.
This class consists of three 4.5-hour sessions.
