Not all artists are good instructors! To be an effective art or craft instructor, you need to hone your adult education skills. In this class, you learn how to design skills-based classes using learning objectives. Based on those objectives, you will design activities - and sequence them - to ensure that students learn what you intended! In addition, you will write a clear class description, create a syllabus or realistic agenda, and generate handouts.

Too many students do not return to classes because they didn't learn what they expected to learn, or the instructors were ill-prepared and could not manage different skill levels. If you want to teach, this is a great place to start. If you already teach, this class can help you make modifications or simply refresh your approach.

The class is two 2-hour sessions, plus homework and an optional post-class individual feedback. READ what other students had to say about the class!

Earn 1 CEU from the University of Arizona. Email for details.

Session 1

  • What not to do as an art or crafts instructor
  • Create a course goal and learning objectives for a specific audience (age, experience level, etc.)
  • Design learning activities that help students achieve learning objectives while having fun
  • Sequencing and timing your activities

Homework: Create a draft lesson plan for review and revision in Session 2.

Session 2

  • Review and revise draft lesson plans
  • Write a course description, syllabus/agenda, and plan handouts
  • Next steps – practicing and making adjustments as needed (timing, activities, etc.)
  • Self-help strategies – checklists, prep, slow/fast learners, memory tricks, etc.

Post-Class Feedback (Required to receive CEU)

  • The instructor will provide feedback on your final lesson plan or observe you teaching class.

Cost

$125/student

Minimum 2 participants. Limited to 6 participants. Minimum age 18.

Instructor Bio

Andrea Edmundson, former co-owner of Upcycle Tucson, has been an educator and corporate trainer for more than 25 years. She specializes in creating courses that focus on skill development. Most recently, she worked for the State Department. She has a PhD in education, but she learned most of her skills in the hands-on development and implementation of classes and workshops. However, Andrea is also an artist that has endured many unproductive or poorly organized art and crafts classes. She understands what students need to be motivated and how they prefer to develop their artistic skills. “Being an effective instructor doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice artistic inspiration; it just means you need to know how to reach your adult learners.”

Class and workshop registration fees are non-refundable. Registration fee includes all materials.

Mosaic Paintings of the Desert (Three sessions in SPRING 2021)

$0.00

These classes are offered by The Art Institute, Arizona Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM)

For details, dates, or to REGISTER, visit: ASDM Art Institute

Are you calmed and refreshed by the desert? You can harness and preserve those feelings with a desert-themed mosaic. In this class, you will create an 8x10” mosaic that looks like a painting from nature, using the double-direct method of mosaics with art glass on wood and non-toxic adhesive. Mosaic artist Andrea Edmundson will show you how to create unique “brush strokes” with art glass. Students will learn how to prepare their substrates, cut and nip glass, use a cartoon from nature provided by the instructor, apply tesserae, and how to grout and finish their pieces. Tools, art glass, and safety equipment are provided. Absolutely no open-toed shoes or open beverage containers. Note, too, that glass cutting and nipping requires considerable hand strength.

This class consists of five 3-hour sessions.
